Mission Statement

The American Alliance for Theatre & Education serves and inspires a growing collective of theatre artists, educators, and scholars committed to transforming young people and communities through the theatre arts.

AATE believes in equity, justice, and inclusion for all.  We believe our work is stronger by the many voices, perspectives, and experiences we bring to the organization and the field.  We actively welcome and include all people regardless of race, socioeconomic class, color, national origin, religion, diverse perspectives, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, neurological or physical ability, veteran status, legal status, or education level.

Vision

The worth of a civilization is measured by its ability to meet the needs of its youth. We envision a world where every child has access to drama and theatre; where every city has a theatre for young audiences; where every community has a youth theatre; where every school has a theatre arts curriculum. We envision a time when the full spectrum of the theatre arts becomes a pervasive part of our landscape. We celebrate the courage and creativity of those artists and educators who do this work even as we connect, inspire, and support them in their profession.

Strategic Plan

The AATE Board is excited to share with you our three year Strategic Plan (2021-2024). As life has taught us this year it can be wildly unpredictable, and we felt it best to create a three year, instead of a five year plan, in order to have something tangible and realistic for us to follow as an organization. We have focused on three main areas: (1) Dismantling White Supremacy within the structures of the organization so as to create  truly inclusive opportunities (2) Looking closely at our finances to continue to keep us solvent and to pay down our debt (3) Looking at how we support our members current needs and accessing the needs of those in our field we are not currently serving and striving to do so.  Please find that plan here. This plan includes our goals, action steps and internally we have identified measurement indicators to continue to hold us accountable to this work. We also look forward to sharing updates on these goals throughout the year.
