Presenter: Seattle Children's Theatre
Wednesday, July 26 from 2-5pm
$60 per ticket
Creative Drama for Mental Wellness is Seattle Children's Theatre's school residency program designed to uplift and empower young people to make positive choices about mental health. This workshop, led by SCT Teaching Artists, will give participants a taste of how WA-area students experience the program in their school classrooms. It will also offer participants strategies for integrating positive psychology and social-emotional learning (SEL) into their practice as theatre educators.Creative Drama for Mental Wellness is a brave, active, and community-focused theatre experience for students in grades 6-12. Guided by SCT Teaching Artists, participants engage in creative play to strengthen trust and collaboration and then focus their energies inward using structured activities that encourage self-reflection. We encourage and guide students to rehearse strategies for mental wellness and self-care with us, using our somatic first aid toolkit. Then, when a true crisis does occur in a student’s life, they have already rehearsed and practiced the techniques that are in their mental wellness toolbelt, and are therefore able to use them more effectively. CDMW bridges theatre education with evidence-based strategies in SEL to help students develop self-awareness and make positive choices in addressing their mental health needs, even in situations that are unjust or outside of their control.
