Keeping it Healthy!
Kick off the weekend at the Guthrie Theater with a creative workshop that puts together the collective expertise of all participants attending the symposium. Led by members of the Education departments at Children’s Theatre Company and the Guthrie Theater, participants will split into groups to build an avatar that embodies what a healthy arts organization looks, acts and feels like through the lens of the Symposium’s three programmatic focus areas – Finance, Human Resources and Advancement.
We will then explore ways to build organizational resiliency and wrap up the evening with a collective brainstorm around questions that can help frame our discussions for the rest of the weekend.

Paradigm Shift: How to leverage more resources for your theater education programs!
Peter Hutchinson leads management consulting strategy for Accenture's U.S. state and local government practice. He previously served as commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Finance, as Minneapolis' superintendent of schools, as the city's deputy mayor, as corporate vice president of the Dayton Hudson Corporation (now Target) and as president of the Bush Foundation, one of Minnesota’s largest independent foundations. Hutchinson co-authored "The Price of Government: Getting the Results We Need in an Age of Permanent Fiscal Crisis," which presents a radically different approach to budgeting.

Artful Teaching and Learning: Planning for Successful Partnerships with K-12 Schools
Theater company education directors, teaching artists, and K-12 classroom teachers and arts specialists all have the common goal of engaging students in meaningful theater learning experiences. But in practice, there are myriad challenges that can make collaboration between arts organizations and schools difficult. In this session we’ll address those challenges by digging into a resource created by Perpich Center for Arts Education and Minneapolis Public Schools, entitled “Artful Teaching and Learning: Student Achievement Through the Arts.” The guide is packed with practical tools like backwards planning models and reflection protocols to help guide thinking about how arts organizations and teachers in K-12 can successfully collaborate.
Goal/Outcome: Gain practical strategies and resources for planning partnerships between arts organizations and K-12 schools.
